When Jesus wrote to seven churches in the Book of Revelation, He had a few good things to tell them. But sadly, most of the letters were to warn and correct them. By then, backsliding, spiritual confusion and doctrinal errors had entered most churches. 2000 years later, the plight of the church is much worse. Sure, there are a few who remain faithful to the Lord, but a large percentage of people are in the condition which He describes as 'ready to die', if not already dead (Re.3:2).
We know that even though there were some sharp rebukes from the Lord, it was love and not judgment that prompted Him to give these warnings (He.12:6). His hope was that they would turn back to Him. We know He wants us too, even from the present pathetic conditions, to return to what He has prepared for us.
Many of today's Christians are generally illiterate when it comes to the Bible. Many of them have not read the whole Bible even once. They have taken the easier road of listening to preachers or reading short devotionals. As a result they have not received the spiritual food that God has prepared for them to grow in knowledge and understanding (1Pe.2:2). They don't know which way to turn when they come to the crossroads of life. They have outsourced their spiritual life to the pastors. They are unable to notice error when it comes. They have no strength to face the temptations of life. They are not even sure if they have a place in heaven.
Many people in churches have a jumbled set of ideas about spiritual things, because they have not learned truths through personal study and experience (He.5:14). They are confused by every turn of teaching, even about faith, salvation, grace, works, etc. False teachings from impressive speakers fool them easily.
With the aim of inviting more people, many churches have made themselves 'seeker-friendly', which works out to lowering the standards of God, offending no one, avoiding hard-hitting truths, winking their eyes over sin, providing unquestioned welcome and friendship, entertainment, etc., without having to give up anything! As a result, many people begin to believe they are Christians, even without repenting from their sins, receiving forgiveness and adoption through faith in Jesus, and without committing to overcoming sin.
Naturally, numbers increase, with quality plummeting simultaneously. Slowly this leads to personal and interpersonal problems. A usual approach the leaders take is to present people with a false hope for the future, saying God will take care of everything, without trying to identify the roots of the problems and dealing with them.
What God wants is a strong team of leaders with clear understanding of the ways of God who are determined to please Him and walk in His ways, and whose aim for the people is to lead them away from their old, sinful ways to walking with Jesus. Some will get offended, but those who remain will be pleasing to the Lord (2Co.2:15,16).
